Dance Is In the Air 4-Week Outdoor Dance Festival

ABOUT THE SHOW

Three San Diego based dance companies come together to present four weeks of outdoor performances at the ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station May 21st – June 6th. After months of pivoting programs to film and online formats, the resident dance companies at the Dorothea Laub Dance Place are ready to convene audiences safely outdoors for this live event in person. Attend all three weeks to see, feel, and experience the variety of mixed reparatory presented by all companies.

All tickets must be purchased in advance. Groups must be purchased together at the same time. Seats will be safely socially distanced by groups.

May 22 at 6:30pm
May 23 at 2:30pm

San Diego Dance Theater presents Other Times, Other Places, a collection of dance works, as part of the Dance is in the Air Festival. This new festival, to be performed on an outdoor stage at Liberty Station, was designed as a collaboration between Malashock Dance, San Diego Ballet, and San Diego Dance Theater and will feature dance performances from each company along with other programming. Incoming Artistic Director Terry Wilson will premiere two new dances to celebrate music from the 1950’s, along with “Words Move,” her compilation of written word and movement first appearing in the November 2020 virtual concert. Guest choreographer and former Artistic Director Jean Isaacs will reset “Phantom Limbs,” a duet illuminating the tragedy of lives lost to AIDS. San Diego dance favorite Khamla Somphanh returns as guest choreographer offering “Purposely Accidental,” a solo work inspired by the haunting, hidden story of bombs dropped in the tiny country of Laos. New to San Diego from Los Angeles and past colleague of Terry, guest artist Rosanna Tavarez will perform a solo exploring a blend of contemporary dance and milonga (a lively, syncopated, playful tango-style dance with African roots and other lineages).

Malashock Dance presents The Bridge
May 27 – 30 at 6:30pm

The Bridge is vibrant new collaboration between Artistic Director, John Malashock and Choreographer, Tristian Griffin (Artistic Director of Tristian Griffin Dance Company in Kansas City, MO). The Bridge mirrors issues that are current to our highly polarized world. Starkly contrasting life stages and political perspectives separate the dancers into groups, whose characters must face what lies between them. As The Bridge unfolds, so will the groups’ decisions whether to pull together, or draw further apart. Will they be able to let their differences become water under the bridge?

San Diego Ballet presents Debussy Dances: Preludes and Arabesques
June 5-6 at 6:30pm

San Diego Ballet’s artistic director Javier Velasco choreographs a rapturous evening of classical dance exploring the poetic, dreamlike world of Claude Debussy. From the romantic Claire de Lune to the evocative Afternoon of a Faun, the celebrated French composer’s works spring to life in an evening of open air delights. Join us for this not to be missed evening of world premieres.
